The Fall of Antoine Walker: A Former NBA Star’s Journey to Bankruptcy

For the common man, the sums made by sports stars are often unfathomable. A year’s salary for the average NBA player can be an amount most people will never earn. And when you get to the stars of the industry, the numbers only go up. The lack of understanding of those who are not gifted with extraordinary talent only increases when you find out that those people who were indeed gifted, and earned huge sums of money, managed to spend everything and throw the money away. The reasons for the various bankruptcies are varied: financial irresponsibility, bad investments, high alimony payments and various addictions. In the following list you will find $672 million paid for 82 shared seasons and gone – and that’s without mentioning the hundreds of millions made by sponsorship contracts as well – dozens of entourage members, imaginary divorce agreements and one private plane, which never took off.

This is the story of Antoine Walker | 12 seasons, $108 million in career basketball earnings

Two years after retirement, Walker declared bankruptcy. How did it happen? Here you can paste every cliché that comes up when you think of an athlete who loses millions in a short time. An entourage that peaked at 70 people (“I was like a human ATM”), designer suits (“I didn’t wear more than once”), a fleet of cars that were mostly unused, gambling, food, failed investments, zero savings, loose property management. When the real estate boom exploded in 2008, Walker – who had founded a real estate company that invested mainly in houses in Chicago – lost what was left of his money and went into debt of 13 million dollars to banks. He parted with most of his possessions in the bankruptcy, including the championship ring he won with Miami in 2006. Today, according to him, he is free of debt, trying to rebuild himself in a modest house where only five people live. “My story is sad,” he told CNN two weeks ago, who was already the subject of a documentary on the subject, “I created a very expensive lifestyle for myself, I gave everyone what they wanted. I thought I was set for life”.
